Fenton Athletic Department, "Big Three" Awards 2022

Congratulations to the following three seniors who are recipients of this year's, "Big Three" Awards.  Pictured from left to right are: Evan Koch (Leroy Decker Award), Grace Olsen (Ivan Williams Award), and Seth Logan (Marc Peck Award).  The background and selection criteria for these awards follows:

The Leroy Decker Award - Coach Decker had an illustrious career at FHS as a teacher and a basketball coach.  During his tenure, his teams produced over 500 victories.  In addition to his extraordinary record, Coach Decker was named coach of the year for girls and boys basketball, and also was bestowed with the honor of being inducted into four Halls of Fame which are: the Michigan High School Coaches Association, the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, the Greater Flint Area and the Fenton Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame.

To be eligible for this award, the student athlete may not have won the Ivan Williams or Marc Peck Awards and must carry a GPA of a 2.8 or higher.  The recipient must also demonstrate determination, enthusiasm, resourcefulness, leadership and achievement.

This year's winner is Evan Koch...He:

  • Participated in the same three sports for all four years.

  • In one sport, this recipient has set two varsity records, three league meet records, been All-State, and a team captain.

  • In another sport, this recipient has earned two first-team All-League awards, been all state, and a member of a state championship team.

The Ivan Williams Award - The award is named in remembrance of Mr. Williams who served as a teacher, coach, and athletic director for 32 years at Fenton High School.  Mr. Williams coached fifteen years and won eight league titles in the sports of football and basketball.  In addition, our current football stadium was renamed from Tiger Field to Ivan Williams Field in 1983.

This award is to be presented to a female student athlete who best meets the following criteria as the most well rounded graduating senior at Fenton High School.  Athletic contributions and accomplishments, scholastic record, citizenship, and leadership are equally weighed to determine the winner as chosen by a committee of administrators and coaches.

This year's winner is Grace Olsen...She:

  • Is a SIX-TIME state champion

  • A four-year All-State honoree

  • Three-time All-American

  • State Bank Athlete of the Week

  • Kiwanis Student-Athlete of the month winner and nominee for Athlete of the Year

  • Team Captain

  • Team MVP

  • And she will be continuing her swim career next year at the University of Indiana.

The Marc Peck Award - Is given in honor of Mr. Marc Peck, a 1948 graduate of Fenton High School.  Marc’s life unfortunately ended way too early in a dormitory fire at Kenyon College in 1949.  “The Marc Peck award was spontaneously founded solely by the Fenton Area School Student Body of 1949.  The award was to be given to the outstanding boy and girl of the graduating class and their names inscribed on the plaque.  Five years later when the plaque was filled, J.C. Peck and his wife Harrie obtained a new plaque.  The dual awarding was changed to read “to the most well rounded male graduate.”  So now, this award is to be presented to a male student athlete who best meets the following criteria as the most well rounded graduating senior at Fenton High School.  Athletic contributions and accomplishments, scholastic record, citizenship, and leadership are equally weighed to determine the winner as chosen by a committee of administrators and coaches.

This year's winner is Seth Logan...He:

  • He has played football, basketball, and baseball all four years and has been team captain in all three sports

  • He has been all conference in football on both offense and defense.

  • He has been named all state in basketball and academic all-state in football and basketball.

  • He has been a Kiwanis Athlete of the Month nominee and a State bank athlete of the week winner.

  • He holds three school records in basketball for his three-point and free-throw shooting proficiency.

  • He will be continuing his basketball career next year at Adrian College.
